The Simplest Way to Write Poetry


Before I begin, let me first of all state here that poetry does not have to about lush green fields, jagged slopes of a valley or the voiceless whispers of the wind. Rather, it could simply be a short narrative of a story - this story could be scary, inspiring, exciting, sad, intriguing or just plain drama. Whichever way, strike to tell your own story. Don't kill yourself trying to write like Soyinka or any of those Nigerian authors you admire - create your own voice and let it grow it's own wings and fly.

A good example is this dark poetry I just read. It's titled 'When Bunnies Attack' - Here's an extract below:

When Bunnies Attack

She used to love the bunnies
She held them day and night
Until one day she realized
That something wasn't right

Her buddy tried to warn her
Before he disappeared
That something had gone far too wrong
And she was next, he feared

The bunnies wouldn't let him
They met him at the door
It's still unknown how they sprayed all
His blood across the floor.

When she came to the doorstep
She found her buddy's head
And before she could cry for help
The little girl...
