The Nigerian Dream: Untold Story of Olajumoke Alao-Sanusi

A Nigerian bride wearing Fix U makeup during her traditional wedding
Without a father to turn to for help, wisdom and guidance, her eyes welled up with tears all over again as she mentally weighed the glaring options before her - Should she strive to become a student of a Nigerian university; but who would pay her tuition… or should she just hit the streets of Lagos and resume her fruitless search for a job?

The Simplest Way to Write Poetry

Before I begin, let me first of all state here that poetry does not have to about lush green fields, jagged slopes of a valley or the voiceless whispers of the wind. Rather, it could simply be a short narrative of a story - this story could be scary, inspiring, exciting, sad, intriguing or just plain drama. Whichever way, strike to tell your own story. Don't kill yourself trying to write like Soyinka or any of those Nigerian authors you admire - create your own voice and let it grow it's own wings and fly.

A good example is this dark poetry I just read. It's titled 'When Bunnies Attack' - Here's an extract below:

Is This a Lucky Photo or a Very Rare Picture?

Hi all, i just came across this photo and i just kept staring at it for more seconds than I can remember.

I Finally Meet a KAI Official That I Like [Lagos]

Today, for the very first time, I saw an official of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) warn a pedestrian to use the bridge rather than cross the ever busy Ikorodu Road in Lagos and risk getting hit by a car. Splendid, isn't it?

This is What I Think About Poetry - Do You Agree?

Poetry without any element of doubt remains one of the deepest forms of expression in the literary world and there are several reasons why this is so.

For instance, while the average reader might pick up a work of prose and enjoy the thrill of reading a story narrated from point 'A' (beginning) to point 'B' (the end), poetry usually requires more than a single read.

This explains why a poem like 'The Washer Woman's Prayer' or 'Richard Cory' would strike the reader on such a subliminal note that the mind is lured towards breezing through the verses yet again.

Such is one of the distinct features of poetry.

Is there any one out there who agrees or disagrees with this?

How to Make a Poem Interesting

If you have ever written a poem before, then you must understand that you must allow your imagination to grow wings and take flight.

A poem, no matter how descriptive it may be, is not to be used to state the obvious. We all know that the grass is green, for example. What you need to express in your poem is what you felt when you saw the green grass.

What emotions did it evoke within you?

What were you going through at the time and how did seeing the green grass change or enhance your feelings at that moment of time?

African Proverb of the Day

Here's one African proverb that i found thoroughly deep and so thought provoking that i had to share it with you. Here:

It is the calm and silent water that drowns a man
                                  - Ashanti of Ghana

What would you rate this proverb out of 100%?

9 Months to Go

Don't be fooled, it is 9months to the end of the year. Enough time to work on your dreams, empower yourself, change dress size, have a baby, move jobs, be healthy, forgive, live, love and be loved in return. Don't be fooled! Time is more expensive than money. Do the right thing now! Start now, act now, live now, love now, prepare for heaven now, doubt your doubts and have faith in your faith, YOU have 9months left...

An Interesting Fact About Wole Soyinka

During the civil war in Nigeria, Soyinka appealed in an article for cease-fire. For this he was arrested in 1967, accused of conspiring with the Biafra rebels, and was held as a political prisoner for 22 months until 1969. Soyinka has published about 20 works: drama, novels and poetry. He writes in English and his literary language is marked by great scope and richness of words.

Can a Judge Send a Journalist Out of a Court? [Posted by Dafph Okotie Daf]

I received this message about an interesting conversation between a court magistrate and a defense counsel right inside a court room just when the magistrate decided to send a journalist out of a court.

I've got to send a special thank you to 'Dafph Okotie Daf' for sharing this with us.

Did You Know This About Making Love?

In ancient England, people could not have sex without consent from the King.
when people wanted to have a child, they had to solicit a permission to the monarchy.
In turn they would supply a plaque to hang on their door when they had sexual relations.
The plaque read "Fornication Under Consent of the King" (F.U.C.K)
This is the origin of the word.

Do you agree with this?

Are All Girls Guilty of This?

I was having a conversation with someone recently and he said something, which i found quite curios about girls. I just thought i should ask you and see what you think:

"Most girls pray for hardworking men, yet they don't respond to greetings from "bricklayers..."

Is this true or false?
