A Rose of Fibre (A Poem by Arewa Jimmy Hands)

As artificial as a classwork

where's a day without a morning

where's a she without a she figure

real or not

Man of God [A Poem by Sobur Adedokun]

Pastor Kingsley speaks inaudible rubbish
When babies at a year learn their speaking

They Dance Naked with Robes On [A Poem by Adewunmi Benedict Olumide]

Those who do evil
Dancing at every man's peril

The Simplest Way to Write Poetry

Before I begin, let me first of all state here that poetry does not have to about lush green fields, jagged slopes of a valley or the voiceless whispers of the wind. Rather, it could simply be a short narrative of a story - this story could be scary, inspiring, exciting, sad, intriguing or just plain drama. Whichever way, strike to tell your own story. Don't kill yourself trying to write like Soyinka or any of those Nigerian authors you admire - create your own voice and let it grow it's own wings and fly.

A good example is this dark poetry I just read. It's titled 'When Bunnies Attack' - Here's an extract below:

Lizard [A Poem by Martha Close]

Each morning, strobed in the flicker of the kitchen light
It speeds a steep slalom up the wall above the sink,
This fir-cone fat one dislodges dust and air and

Fog [A Poem by Helen Cadbury]

Earth-sweat, sea-breath,
hangs about, cold-shouldering street corners,

Violin [A Poem by Sheila Black]

You must use the body - its curves,
its hollows, the spring of the sound, which
brings back what is absent, what has

Hawk [A poem by Diana Adams]

Hook-nosed bandit, dazed
red shouldering the ledge.
His imprint still fresh

All You Need to Know About Narrative Poetry

Narrative poetry is a form of poetry which tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters as well; the entire story is usually written in metred verse. The poems that make up this genre may be short or long, and the story it relates to may be complex. It is usually dramatic, with objectives, diverse characters, and metre. Narrative poems include epics, ballads, idylls and lays.

National Poetry Competition 2013: The Winning Poem

Read the unexpected picture of the first world war painted by the winner of this year's £5,000 prize

Clothes that escaped the Great War by Patricia McCarthy

Not the familiar ghosts: the shaggy dog of Thorne Waste
that appeared only to children; the chains clanking
from the Gyme seat, nor the black barge at Waterside.

This is What I Think About Poetry - Do You Agree?

Poetry without any element of doubt remains one of the deepest forms of expression in the literary world and there are several reasons why this is so.

For instance, while the average reader might pick up a work of prose and enjoy the thrill of reading a story narrated from point 'A' (beginning) to point 'B' (the end), poetry usually requires more than a single read.

This explains why a poem like 'The Washer Woman's Prayer' or 'Richard Cory' would strike the reader on such a subliminal note that the mind is lured towards breezing through the verses yet again.

Such is one of the distinct features of poetry.

Is there any one out there who agrees or disagrees with this?

How to Make a Poem Interesting

If you have ever written a poem before, then you must understand that you must allow your imagination to grow wings and take flight.

A poem, no matter how descriptive it may be, is not to be used to state the obvious. We all know that the grass is green, for example. What you need to express in your poem is what you felt when you saw the green grass.

What emotions did it evoke within you?

What were you going through at the time and how did seeing the green grass change or enhance your feelings at that moment of time?

When Was The Last Time You Wrote a Poem With a Pen and Paper?

To be honest, the last time I wrote a poem (or short story) with a pen and paper was about a decade ago.

Not that I got lazy or developed a dislike for those writing materials but the moment i started writing with my laptop and then later on, mobile devices, I've found it hard to return to a pen and a blank page.

How to Write a Poem

I'm not going to go into any lengthy article on how to write a poem. Rather, I'm just going to advise you - If you're a first time poet or still trying to understand how to write a poem, you must never take your audience for granted.

Shortest Peom Ever Written By Edgar Allan Poe

The shortest poem ever written by Edgar Allan Poe was 15 lines long:

Thy beauty is to me Like those Nicean barks of yore, That gently, o'er a perfum'd sea, The weary way-worn wanderer bore To his own native shore. On desperate seas long won't to

Making My Blue Heart Red Again [Poem by Enyonam Apaloo]

When we first met, I didn't think it possible
My heart, so cold was frozen by the past hurt
It was kept under lock and key
But with all the strength I had
I couldn't fight the feeling deep within

Annabel Lee [By Edgar Allan Poe]

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

A Dream [a poem by Edgar Allan Poe]

A Dream

In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed-
But a waking dream of life and light
Hath left me broken-hearted.
