When the Fire Goes Dim [By Chukwuemeka Onyimadu]

Blood sucking demons
ravaged my body,
left me cold and
wounded to die.

Alone i lie
in cold desert country,
watching those blinking
stars that point nowhere.

Clutching flimsily
to a cold metal torch,
ignited
but burning dimly.

It burnt so dimly
I couldn't see
what lay ahead
in my lofty quest.
And so the demons
attacked,
and i, unseeing
was left wounded in the cold
just because the fire went dim.

This poem was composed by Chukwuemeka Onyimadu
