Is Abramovich Serious About Taking Over as Chelsea Manager?
Many would remember that barely 24 hours ago, we got wind of a purported move by the Chairman of Chelsea Football Club, Roman Abramovich to take over as the club's official coach - a news many found too ridiculous to be true.
Well, so far, there hasn't been an y confirmation or denial of this report from the Chelsea camp and we're keeping our ears to the ground on this one even as the news continues to spark series of controversies especially when one considers the implication of Abramovich becoming the club's manager especially considering coach Rafael Benitez's inevitable exit.
Below is the initial report we posted on the story
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is to assume charge as manager of Chelsea Football Club in the summer, according to a surprise report by talkSPORT. The Blues' owner presently employs Spaniard Rafael Benitez as an interim boss, following the mid-season sacking of Italian Roberto Di Matteo.
Speculation has linked a number of Europe's top managers to the Stamford Bridge job this season but a reputation of being a hard taskmaster and one too ready to interfere and wield the axe has meant few have evinced any serious interest in taking the job.
Ex-Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola and former boss Jose Mourinho, now with Spanish champions Real Madrid, were linked to west London but the former has since signed with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich and although the latter remains an option and has expressed an interest in returning to the Premier League, nothing has been confirmed.
All of this, it appears, has led to Abramovich considering doing himself what he feels a number of other managers could not... lead Chelsea to sustained glory.
The Russian, talkSPORT indicates, is undergoing a fast-track managerial training course at St George's Park, the FA's new centre for footballing excellence. The report says he is now only one exam away from a UEFA Pro licence, which will allow him to take charge of any professional European football club.
"I've heard about Roman Abramovich. He's nearly completed his coaching badges. It was a rumour at the beginning but now it's out there and everyone knows about it. I spoke to him and he wanted to know a few things about how to become the best manager in the world," ex-Italy international and Chelsea fan favourite Gianluca Vialli commented.
"He actually wanted to buy his coaching badges, but I said you can't buy that, you have to go through the process," the 48-year-old added.
Vialli also said he expected Abramovich to be a good manager and one with enough potential to be considered a serious candidate to managing the club.
"He will have the full attention of the players and he can talk to them about contracts, line-ups and stuff. I think it will be the first time we have had a chairman and manager of the same club and I wish him all the best. I think he will do a great job," he concluded.
